CRA Engagement with Cannabis Licence Holders

On Friday, 21 August 2026, the Cannabis Regulatory Authority (CRA) engaged cannabis licence holders at BICC, Lilongwe, to discuss the state of the cannabis industry in Malawi, the trajectory for growth, challenges that industrial players are facing and a pathway into the bold future of Malawi’s cannabis industry.

The engagement provided an important platform for dialogue, collaboration and practical solutions towards a more compliant, sustainable and value-driven cannabis industry in Malawi.

In his remarks, the Director General, Mr Chris Chaima Banda, emphasized continuous compliance, the need for high quality and affordable  seed multiplication, and the importance of networking among all industrial players which is a foundation for knowledge and good practice sharing to grow a strong industry.

He also highlighted CRA’s vision of positioning Malawi’s cannabis industry for the global market, diversifying the economy and improving rural livelihoods.

Key take aways of the engagement were:

 Get licensed before undertaking regulated activities.
 Know what your licence permits to avoid falling on the wrong side of the law.
 Treat compliance as continuous.
 Build quality and traceability across the value chain.
 Design for international standards from the start.
 Focus on processing and value addition—not only cultivation and distribution.
